What Is Raman Spectrometry?

Raman spectrometry, discovered by C.V. Raman in 1928, is the process of using laser illumination to prompt molecules to react. Each molecule reacts differently to light, yielding its unique fingerprints. Spectrometry enables the user to discover the fingerprints of molecules in the matter you want to test.

The early Raman spectrometers were large, unwieldy devices. Three new Prismal devices, powered by MEMs technology, enable a dramatic simplification for the entire process:

  1. Put the material you want to test in our Specimen Containment Device (SCD).
  2. Use the Prismal MEMs-based analyzer to generate its molecular fingerprints.

Stephanie

Stephanie earned a BA at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Her background in art and marketing allows her to bring new perspectives to product design and marketing, as well as a deeply rooted ethics to benefit agriculture and human health. Growing up in the Elite Robotics family has always meant a great deal to Stephanie, and she intends to continue her mother Pat’s legacy as she partners with her father Bob for Prismal’s growth.

Bob

Bob earned a BS at California State University, Northridge and spent his early professional career working with military weapons systems. Making good on a life-long dream, Bob ultimately founded his own business, Elite Robotics, alongside his wife Pat. Together, they developed a series of solutions for streamlining manufacturing processes. In both his robotics and consulting business, he has been directly responsible for capturing contracts with hi-tech Fortune 100 companies in the global medical, biotech, and industrial spaces. Bob’s experience with fundraising, marketing, operations, business development, and fundraising uniquely positions Prismal for success, from proof-of-concept to market.

Graham

Graham holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. He has worked in R&D and product development for over 30 years in fields spanning automotive, medical products, aerospace, telecommunications, and consumer products. Graham has held leadership positions up to VP roles in engineering, research, and product development in companies such as Hewlett Packard and Lockheed Martin. In addition to being the inventor of dozens of patents, Graham is also a patent agent registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His years of experience in the patent practice at one of the top national law firms enables him to prepare and successfully prosecute patent applications in a variety of fields including robotics and biochemistry.

Mike

Mike has an MBA Marketing from Rutgers University and a BS in Computer Science for Business from the DeVry Institute of Technology. Currently, he is the Steven Dorfman Professor of Practice and Executive Director of the Steven Dorfman Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Cal Lutheran. He teaches innovation and entrepreneurship in Cal Lutheran’s undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA in Europe programs. He also organizes Cal Lutheran’s New Venture Competition. A frequent speaker on entrepreneurship and early-stage investing, Mike advises startups on funding, operations, and business model strategies.

The Prismal analyzer can detect Raman-active materials, which include a wide variety of organic and inorganic compounds. Simply “ask Google” if the material you want to test is Raman active.

No chemicals are required for testing. Some samples may require purified water or, in some cases, no sample prep at all.

After the Prismal analyzer determines the molecular structures present in the test sample, the software finds a match in our cloud-based library database. 

Users can research local and regional trends in relation to what they’re testing, as well as access to additional resources [earthquake website, water website, NOA website – need more info] to provide context for their sample results and develop a fast, strategic response to their testing data.
